Testing young Students

Since Children don't know the meaning of testing, there is a way where you could ensure that noone is looking at anyone by putting colorful folders for a way to hide their papers. They put their desks in rows during testing so that they'll know it's serious time and then when they are done they put their desks back into groups it only takes a minute.

Farm theme: Hen on a nest

This is hen art craft i wanted to do something different. So i got a coloring page from the internet of a hen had the children color it and we pasted yellow and white feathers.

Here we made a nest. First you get a plate then put some glue and spread yarn on top. Make eggs by cutting oval shapes from white contruction paper. Then you'll have a nest.

Here you get a stick and put tape on the back side of the hen.

Finally you make a cut on the plate so that the stick will be inserted inside. It looks like the hen is sitting on the nest. Here kids can make a stick puppet show from it and move it however they want. Doesn't it look great? :)

Tree of Proverbs

CIMG0929

This is the tree of proverbs! I got a fake tree and staple two proverbs each 2 or 3 weeks. I put the tree in the story corner. We learn the proverbs, they understand, memorize and then i staple it to the tree. They like to read from it and that way they won't forget them.

Word of the Week

CIMG0928

Every week i post a new word i usually pick hard words. Kids at this age grasp anything so don't think if it's hard they won't get it! U'll be astonished at how kids will benefit from this and will even start using them in sentences. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE GRADE ONES! :)

Shy Students

shy

I have a very shy student in my class and she never answers or participates with class discussions. However, her grades are very good and they would be even better if she participates and expresses herself.

If she wants to go to the bathroom she comes to me while everyone is looking away and doesn’t even ask. She just shakes and puts her legs closer together meaning “May i go to the bathroom? ” It bothers me because i know she has potential to excel.

I’m sure many teachers go through the same issue and parents are concerned which is why you should read this post it can be very helpful:

Tips for helping a shy student:

1. Point out to students when good communication behaviors have occurred and why they are good behaviors. This should be done for all students. Do not single out shy students or label anyone as shy.

2. Never make fun of students. Don’t put students on the spot and keep them there while everyone watches them squirm. Have individual conferences with students to get to know them and find out about them as communicators.

3. Divide your class up into small peer groups for some activities. It is often much easier for a student to come out of his or her shell when there are fewer people to do it in front of.

4. Seat your shy student by some of your more friendly and talkative students. Of course, pay attention to whether or not the shy student starts to come more out of his or her shell… or retreat back into it. Sometimes it can help to be around someone who forces you to talk to them, but sometimes it can cause more anxiety.

How can parents help:

Don’t . . .

  • Cross the street to avoid people you are too nervous to see.
  • Embarrass your child in public.
  • Criticize people in public.
  • Berate yourself for having failed when you try things and they don’t turn out the way you would like.
  • Berate your children when they make a mistake.

Arrange play dates for your children when they are young and seek out safe places for your children to interact with others and practice social skills as they get older (e.g., volunteer work, tutoring younger children, clubs and other structured activities with supportive group leaders).

Story Corner

CIMG0925

This is our story corner as you can see it's very cozy. There are stories 2 couches and a carpet. I use this corner mostly for early finishers to grab a story and read quietly after they finish their work. Sometimes i sit with the girls in the corner and i read stories for them. Other times i get puzzles and games and we sit in a circle and play together.

Rewarding Students with a game of UNO

At the end of each week i reward my students a period of cards and games. Here we are playing UNO. I had these cards at home and i wasn't even using them, so i thought i'd take them to class and teach this game to my kids. You'd think it's no beneficial but in fact it is! It teaches matching colors, recognizing numbers, taking turns, and strengthens their thinking skills. They love this game and they look forward to it especially after a full week of studying.

People Working together theme

The theme we were working on was how people work together. So i decided to have kids get magazines that they dont need anymore from home. They broguht the magazine to class and we had a collage. I told them they have to look for people working together. Some found a makeup artist putting make up for a girl, others found soccer players working together as a team, student and teacher working together etc.... This was the display outside the classroom door. I like to display students'posters outside so when parents come to pick up their children they will see what their kids are doing and at the same time it's class decoration.
